About KC
KC and family
I grew up on the beach in Florida. At age 13—when I grew tired of hanging out on the beach talking about lip gloss and boys—my dad decided I should go to a five-week, all girls camp in Wyoming. I didn’t know what was in Wyoming, let alone why I should go there. But off I went. It changed the course of my life, as I fell in love with the mountains and outdoors.
After four years of college at William and Mary in Virginia, I headed out West, landing in Portland, Oregon for law school. My passion for the outdoors led me from guiding teenagers in the backcountry to studying environmental and natural resources law at Lewis and Clark Law School. After graduating, I took a job at the U.S. Department of the Interior in Washington, D.C. I stayed at DOI for about seven years, working on public land and government law.
I moved to Boulder in 2002. After getting yet another degree, this time at the University of Denver, I continued pursuing my interest in how humans interact with the land, by working in Denver for a progressive real estate developer that focused on urban in-fill development and green building.
I wasn’t in Boulder very long before I married my husband Miles. We soon had a son, Leo, and I stopped working all together. Having Leo has informed my outlook almost more than anything. Seeing how a child is born with his own ideas, and knowing how hard it is to make the right choices for a child, I have become much more accepting of all individuals, and the choices they make for themselves. I believe that we should approach all people, no matter how different they may be from ourselves, with compassion— recognizing that we all are trying to do what we think is right. I don’t always succeed in doing this myself, but it is an approach and philosophy I hope to bring to City Council.
Today, Leo, Miles, and I live in a lovely house in Newlands. Since living in Boulder, I’ve been involved with the Sierra Club Indian Peaks Group, have served on the City’s Planning Board, and have recently started as a Leadership Fellow at the Community Foundation of Boulder County. Miles works at ReMax of Boulder and otherwise spends a lot of time biking, climbing, and being a great Dad. And Leo can usually be found looking mischievous with his favorite tool or wooden stick on the steps of our house.
